Ransomware keeps climbing
Ransomware was involved in 48% of confirmed data breaches in 2025, the highest share in the 19-year history of the Verizon DBIR. Small and mid-sized businesses bear the brunt, precisely because they tend to have weaker defenses, thinner IT staffing, and slower recovery capacity, making them efficient, reliable targets for ransomware-as-a-service operations.
AI has rewritten the phishing playbook
The old advice, watch for typos and awkward phrasing, no longer applies. Generative AI now lets attackers craft polished, personalized lures in seconds, and AI-driven voice cloning is fueling a sharp rise in “vishing” attacks. Business Email Compromise, which relies on impersonation rather than malware, has already cost victims more than $3 billion according to the FBI.
A new risk is emerging from inside the business
Shadow AI, employees feeding sensitive company or client data into unsanctioned consumer AI tools, is becoming one of the most overlooked governance gaps heading into 2027.
The report’s message for business leaders is practical, not alarmist: assume you’re a target, modernize security awareness training around behavior rather than grammar, set a clear AI usage policy, invest in 24/7 monitoring, test your incident response plan before you need it, and vet third-party vendor access.
