REMOVE that unwanted freeware…

September 16, 2024 Weekly IT Security Tip

Why Removing Bloatware is Essential

Like it or not, PC manufacturers LOVE to stuff your brand-new PC full of “free” applications. They get paid to do it, so you’ve got a slim chance of getting one without a side of spamware. But clutter is the enemy of a speedy PC, and if you’re not using a particular software on a regular basis, it’s best to REMOVE it completely. That way you don’t have it sucking up processing speed AND leaving the door open to hackers and malware.

Why Bloatware is a Problem

When you first boot up your new PC, you might notice a slew of pre-installed applications. These can range from trial versions of antivirus software to games and utilities you never asked for. While some of these might be useful, most are just taking up space and resources.

  1. Performance Drain: Unnecessary applications running in the background can significantly slow down your system. They consume valuable CPU and memory resources, making your PC sluggish.
  2. Security Risks: Bloatware can be a gateway for malware and hackers. Outdated or rarely used software can have vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit.
  3. Storage Hog: These applications take up precious storage space, which could be better used for your files and programs.

How to Identify and Remove Bloatware

  1. Review Installed Programs: Go to your Control Panel or Settings and review the list of installed programs. Look for software you didn’t install yourself.
  2. Use Dedicated Tools: There are tools designed to help you identify and remove bloatware. Programs like PC Decrapifier or Should I Remove It? can be very helpful.
  3. Manual Uninstallation: You can manually uninstall unwanted programs by right-clicking on them in the list and selecting “Uninstall.”

Keep Your PC Clean

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your PC running smoothly. Make it a habit to review and remove unnecessary software periodically. This not only improves performance but also enhances security.

By taking the time to declutter your PC, you ensure it runs faster, stays secure, and provides a better overall experience. So, don’t let bloatware bog you down—take control and keep your system clean!
