Columbia, MD Profile
Ranked among the wealthiest cities in America, Columbia has 10 individual neighborhoods that are little communities in themselves – some have middle and high schools. Streets in Columbia are named for famous works of art and literature, and recreational facilities include a sports park and 25 public swimming pools.
Columbia is a unique American community. It was an experiment in social and urban planning with nine self-contained villages built around a town center. Columbia has man-made lakes, recreation centers, a thriving arts scene and notable public schools. Its own business hubs give residents an alternative to commuting into Washington, D.C., or Baltimore.
Within each “village” exist distinct neighborhoods, all of them taking street names from famous works of art and literature. Some notable pairings: Hobbit’s Glen and J.R.R. Tolkien; Running Brook and Robert Frost; Clemens Crossing and Mark Twain. Each village has its own association, a village center and neighborhood centers that provide day care and other services. Public art takes center stage. A three-figure sculpture depicting family love, for example, is the centerpiece of a two-acre plaza on The Wilde Lake Village Green. Entire books could be – and have been – written about Columbia.
